Weather and Road/Sidewalk/Walkway Conditions Upcoming and Ongoing Improvements to Chautauqua's Grounds

Residents and guests are advised of the following listing of street work and other improvements to the Chautauqua Institution grounds scheduled for the next two months, as our crews and contractors work to make infrastructure improvements in advance of the 2021 Summer Assembly. Additional projects, dates and details will be added and updated as work progresses.

Much of the street work also includes coordination with National Fuel, the Chautauqua Utility Company and National Grid. These utility companies are required to provide advance notice to any affected property owners; please contact them directly if you have questions.

As always, all details are subject to change, and we thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to improve our public environs for everyone's benefit.

ROAD WORK

Including gas line replacement:

  • Waugh Avenue, from Massey to Pratt, beginning the week of April 25
  • Janes Avenue, from Clark Brick Walk to just past the Chautauqua Women’s Club, beginning late this week (will cause minor disruptions to operations Athenaeum, which will remain open for foodservice and overnight reservations)
  • Simpson and Whitfield, from Bowman to just past Asbury
  • Lower Miller Avenue, from Simpson to South Lake
  • Asbury, from Whitfield to upper Miller Park.

Surface replacement only:

  • Fletcher Avenue, from Park to Peck, beginning the week of April 25
  • Prospect Avenue, from Palestine to Pratt
  • Hedding Avenue, from Palestine to just past Howard Hanson
  • Hazlett Avenue, from Hedding to Pratt and on to Elm Lane

(Once this spring work is finished, all streets south of approximately Bowman will have been upgraded over the course of the past five years.)

PARKING LOT WORK

Some targeted driving and parking lanes in the South Lot will be resurfaced, beginning the week of April 25. This work will involve the removal of a lone honey locust tree in the middle of the lot.

Weather and Road/Sidewalk/Walkway Conditions High Wind Warning, Friday, March 26

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 26, with sustained winds of 25--40 mph and gusts of up 60 mph expected. Widespread power outages are also expected. The NWS suggests securing loose outdoor objects this evening. Chautauqua residents and guests are advised to please exercise caution if you must move around the grounds on Friday, and to steer clear of any downed utility lines.

  • Due to outages in the area caused by today's high winds, wait times for calls to our main Ticket and Information Office may be longer than usual, though the system is still operational. If a call is disconnected: We will do our best to call you back, but you may need to call again to be connected to a different agent. Thank you for your patience.
